CUERNAVACA, MORELOS, MEXICO

Cuernavaca is a resort city and capital of the state of Morelos 50 miles (75 kilometers) southwest of Mexico City. From Mexico City you cross the Ajusco mountains, part of the Sierra Madre range descending to Cuernavaca, located at 5,000 ft (1,340 mt) above sea level. The city is known as “The City of Eternal Spring” due to its near perfect year round climate and has attracted vacationers since the days of the Aztecs being considered a perfect place to escape for relaxation, tranquility and beauty. The city’s population is estimated at 350,000, although the numbers grow much larger on weekends due to the many visitors arriving from Mexico City. It is typical of the Mexican tradition to have much of the city’s beauty hidden behind walls, often adorned with vibrant bougainvillea. The temperature ranges from 78°F (26°C) to 90°F (32°C) year round. Traditionally the rainy season lasts from June to October. Cuernavaca is situated ideally as a base for exploring a great diversity of interesting places not only within the city but in the state. There are plenty of museums, archeological sites, churches, haciendas, bathing resorts (balnearios), lakes, streams and villages. And a few hours drive will take you to Acapulco, Taxco, Ixtápan de la Sal, Puebla and Cholula. The city has modern theatres, shopping malls, hotels and universities. The international airport is at present being remodeled and is due to reopen in 2010. |

There have been many celebrity residents, and there is a substantial number of foreign residents. It is perhaps one of the city’s strengths that foreigners in the area become integrated into the welcoming local community. The Newcomers Club of Cuernavaca assists in that mission.
